Theory of Knowledge

Professor Michael Bradie

This course is an introduction to epistemology or the theory of knowledge. We will discuss some of the key problems in the theory of knowledge as they have been presented from ancient times to the present. What is the nature of human knowledge? How does knowledge relate to and differ from belief? What are the limits of human knowledge? Can human beings ever really know anything? What are the grounds for rational belief and the grounds for changing beliefs? We will examine the views of the ancients, and the classical rationalists and empiricists, as well as the views of contemporary writers on these on other themes.
