Philosophy 780

Wittgenstein and His Influence

Professor Michael Bradie

Ludwig Wittgenstein is a seminal figure in the development of 20th century philosophical thought.  The seminar will focus on three key Wittgensteinian texts, the Tractatus, Blue & Brown Books and the Philosophical Investigations.   Rather than work our way through these texts in a chronological order we will use a topic oriented approach.  The topics are outlined with reading questions and supplementary reading in a Workbook organized by Christopher Coope and others.  Then, with time permitting, we may look at some of Wittgenstein’s influence in fields outside the narrow range of philosophy, e. g., in psychology and linguistics.

This course satisfies area requirement 2 or 3 (but not both).
