"The Wrongness of Slavery" by Tommy Lott.
What is the peculiar injustice of slavery? With a focus on a selection of definitions prominent in Marxist and liberal democratic
political thought, I argue that the question of why slavery is wrong turns on a definition of the concept. Although various
conceptions of slavery have been offered to show why it is wrong, none have managed to specify an injustice unique to slavery.
This shortcoming has important implications for current social policy regarding the exploitation of the unpaid labor of women
and culdren in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. I will insist upon a less metaphorical notion of slavery to address this problem
more adequately.
