I—Introduction to the Department of Philosophy
Dear Philosophy Students,
Philosophy is the study of life's biggest questions—one’s that human beings have wondered about from time immemorial. How
can we know the right thing to do? Is there a right thing to do? What should people do when their cherished values conflict?
Is there a god? Are people merely biochemical machines or do they have minds or souls as well as physical bodies? How should
society be organized? How can one discover the truth—if there is truth? What is truth, anyway? Is there a reality beyond what
we experience in our brains or minds? If there is, how could we ever know that reality? The study of these kinds of fundamental
questions both shapes your understanding of the human condition and sharpens your reading, writing, reasoning, and communication
skills. For this reason, in addition to the intrinsic interest of the issues explored, the study of philosophy is excellent
preparation for law school and any career in which these skills are important.
We emphasize applied philosophy—that is, the application of our discipline to real-world situations. Our department is recognized
as one of the best in the country for the study of applied philosophical issues. We are a relatively small department and
we pride ourselves on the collegiality the faculty, graduate assistants, and undergraduate students who comprise our learning
community. We invite you to join us in the exploration of life’s biggest questions.
Sincerely yours,
Lou Katzner Trustee Professor and Acting Chair Department of Philosophy
Dear Philosophy Students,
Welcome to the Philosophy Department at BGSU! As undergraduate advisor, my role is to assist our majors, minors, and students
interested in philosophy with course selection, concerns about classes, filing of junior audit check sheets, career counseling,
and information about university personnel. I am here to keep you informed about what is happening in philosophy today, both
at the university and in the profession. I would be happy to meet with you to discuss the philosophy major or minor, and to
fill you in on the benefits of studying philosophy at BGSU. We have a small, collegial department, which allows for close
and fruitful interaction between faculty and students. I look forward to getting to know you!
Sincerely yours,
Jeff Moriarty Assistant Professor and Undergraduate Advisor
