Robert Goodwin 1925-2012
On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, Dr. Robert P. Goodwin (Bob) passed away surrounded by his loving family. Bob was born in New York City on January 18, 1925 to Peter and Helen Goodwin and had two brothers, Frank and Dick Goodwin. He enjoyed 87 amazing years and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Bob married Elaine Fitzpatrick in 1952, and recently enjoyed their 60th wedding anniversary. Bob attended Fordham University in New York City and received his doctorate in Philosophy from Georgetown University.
In 1958, he began his teaching career at DePaul University in Chicago. In 1961, Bob and Elaine and their growing family moved to Bowling Green where he taught Philosophy for 30 years at Bowling Green State University. During his time at BGSU, he served as chair of the Philosophy Department, was the co-founder and visionary of the Cluster College (which was a model for today's Learning Communities), translated articles for the Philosopher's Index, and received numerous awards and recognitions.
Bob had an amazing ability to balance his professional career with a commitment to his community. He was one of the founding members of the Black Swamp Arts Festival, volunteered at The Link, was a member of Bowling Green's Human Relations Committee, Wood County Hospital's Ethics Committee, and served on the boards of the Bowling Green Symphony Orchestra and the Wood County Municipal Court. Bob was a published author with a focus on the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas. Bob and Elaine are active members of St. Thomas More University Parish.
Bob had many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed attending concerts, plays and athletic events at BGSU. He was a life-long fan of the New Yankees and boasts seeing Babe Ruth play when he was a young boy. He was a familiar face at the Student Rec Center pool at BGSU. Many hours each day were spent reading the New York Times while enjoying a cup of tea. Hobbies include woodworking, listening to music, reading, and sitting on his front porch enjoying a cocktail while having conversations with family and friends while admiring the bright blue sky.
Family was the primary focus of Bob and Elaine's marriage. The values and morals that Bob and Elaine modeled each and every day will be carried on by their 11 children: Anne (Bob) Tracy, Rob (Mary) Goodwin, Tag (Ann) Goodwin, Ken (Maribeth) Goodwin, Jamie (Anne) Goodwin, Justin (Mary) Goodwin, Peter (Kathi) Goodwin, Stephen (Janet) Goodwin, Phillip (Colleen) Goodwin, Mary (John) Fredericksen, and Sara (Joe) Mazur. They also have 33 grandchildren: Zach, Courtney, Hannah, Brenna, Erin, Molly, Sam, Paul, David, Stephanie, Betty, Adam, Kelsey, Josh, Kellie, Ben, Meg, Stephen, Anna, Patrick, Kyle, PJ, Erika, Ian, Shannon, Conor, Nick, Adrian, Joey, Matthew, Andrew, Zoe and Bella, and six great grandchildren: Michael, Molly, Logan, Anna, Mason, and Jack.
