Introducing... Jeff Moriarty

One of our two new permanent faculty members this Fall, Jeff Moriarty hails originally from Baltimore, Maryland, and has also lived in Illinois, New Jersey and California. His was a somewhat unplanned route into philosophy. His original goal was to practice medicine, and he wanted a "fun" major in his undergraduate degree while he was on his way there. The major was philosophy, of course, and it proved to be so enjoyable that he abandoned his medical plans. Instead, he enrolled for graduate school in the philosophy program at Rutgers University and wrote a dissertation under Howard McGary's supervision entitled Just Deserts: The Significance of Desert to Distributive Justice. Having completed this, he found a job teaching philosophy at California State University at Long Beach, and from there made his way to Bowling Green.

Within philosophy, Jeff has also followed his interests rather than a pre-determined path. He originally intended to focus on early modern philosophy, especially Descartes, but he found himself drawn into political philosophy and then business ethics. The connections between the latter two areas intrigued him as they often seemed to engage the same concepts, but in different ways. Lately, he has become interested in W.D. Ross's views on desert.

He and his wife Kelly, who is a Health Care Consultant, live in Ann Arbor, which they enjoy very much. Outside philosophy, Jeff enjoys walking, watching television (his current favorite show is the U.S. version of The Office), golfing and drinking beer. On the last point, he noted that he is looking forward to acquainting himself with some midwestern beers. Hopefully some of our more seasoned department members will assist him in this aspect of his acclimatisation.
