Natural Rights Conference Brings Old Faces Back
The Social Philosophy and Policy Center hosted two more great conferences this past year. The first was in September 2003
on Natural Rights Liberalism from Locke to Nozick. What made it particularly noteworthy was the number of BGSU Philosophy Department and Policy Center alumni that were on
show, including Loren Lomasky and Chris Morris, both of whom arrived fashionably late as Hurricane Isabel closed airports
on the eastern side of the country. (It was speculated that they hitch-hiked all the way from the East Coast. One attendeee
remarked "It would take a brave soul to pick those two up in the middle of Pennsylvania.") Other familiar faces included those
of David Schmidtz, John Hasnas, Eric Mack and Michael Zuckert. There was even a New Zealander to add some real class to the
proceedings in the shape of Jeremy Waldron.
The second conference was in April 2004 on the topic of Personal Identity. Among the many metaphysical luminaries presenting
was our own Marvin Belzer.
The Social Philosophy and Policy Center will host a conference in the Fall of 2004 on Justice and Global Politics, where we hope to be reunited with more old friends, including Neera Badhwar, Waldemar "Don't Call Me Wally" Hanasz, Chandran
Kukathas and, once more, Chris Morris. Chris's return visits are in fact becoming so frequent that Margy is rumoured to be
considering placing a second desk in Ray Frey's office for him to use.
