The Fish Has Surfaced!
Hello! The wait is over! Welcome to the first edition of the web-based newsletter for Bowling Green State University's Philosophy Department.
This newsletter will be published periodically to keep current students, faculty and alumni informed on the happenings in and around the Department.
Many of you will recall that suggestions were requested for the name of the newsletter, and as you can see, the winner was something of a surprise. When the call for names went out, a reward in the form of a chocolate fish was promised to the person who came up with the winning suggestion. One Thomas May, a former BGSU doctoral student, thought that the name "The Chocolate Fish" had a ring to it and in the final voting round, it received more votes than the others. So there it is. (Well, you should have voted, shouldn't you!)
There is a tenuous philosophical justification that could be made too (isn't there always!) In some truly enlightened parts of the world (for example, New Zealand) the chocolate fish serves as a universal motivator and reward, so it could be viewed as the hedon/utile objectified, or alternatively as "that at which all things aim."
Fortuitously, I also happen to count a fully literate chocolate fish among my acquaintances, and she agreed to help with editing, proofreading and perhaps even contribute the odd article. Here is a picture of her at work.

Well, I hope you enjoy the first issue. I'd be happy to receive your comments, news and articles for the next instalment. Any errors and omissions are entirely the fault of the Fish.
