Bachelor of Science in Applied Health Science
(Health Science Specialization)

Physical therapy is an essential part of the health and human services profession. Along with other health care providers, physical therapists work to restore working abilities to individuals permanently or temporarily disabled by illness, disease, trauma or inherited abnormalities.

Career Opportunities

Employment opportunities for physical therapy graduates are excellent. Increased public awareness and the expansion of physical therapy practice into nontraditional health care environments have been responsible for the increased number of career opportunities.

After satisfactory completion of state licensure requirements, physical therapists may choose from a variety of job opportunities. The American Physical Therapy Association's specialty areas include orthopedics, neurology, pediatrics, geriatrics, cardiopulmonary, community health, oncology and sports medicine. Opportunities in management, education and research increase for those who hold advanced degrees.

Curriculum: Doctor of Physical Therapy Transition

The Medical University of Ohio transitioned to a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program in 2006. Admission preference will continue to be given to students from BGSU and the University of Toledo, however, students will be required to complete a bachelors degree prior to starting at MUO.

The prerequisites for admission to MUO DPT program are:
-Completion of a bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0
-Two semesters of Biology (BIOL 205 and 331 or 332 or 314/315)
-Two semesters of General Chemistry (CHEM 125 and 127+128)
-Two semesters of Physics with lab (PHYS 201 and 202)
-Two semesters of Psychology (PSYC 101 and 310)

The following courses are highly recommended, but not required:
-Statistics (MATH 115 or PSYC 270 or STAT 200 or SOC 369)
-Exercise Physiology (KNS 360)
-Biomechanics (KNS 370)
-Medical Terminology (MEDT 301)

Courses in the professional curriculum include the basic sciences, physical therapy theory and procedures, applied physical therapy and medical sciences, clinical practica and an internship. These courses are offered on the campus of the Medical University of Ohio at Toledo (MUO).

Special Features

MUO's facilities are available to physical therapy students. Only 23 miles from Bowling Green, MUO offers the professional curriculum in physical therapy and other professional programs. MUO recently opened a nursing and allied health building which houses the physical therapy classrooms and labs.

An important feature of the physical therapy program is the practical experience gained through the required practicum and internship.

More than 150 hospitals, outpatient clinics, health agencies, rehabilitation centers and public and private schools are affiliated with the program. By combining classroom theory with real-work situations, physical therapy students learn the necessary skills to enter the profession or continue on to graduate school. It is not unusual for an internship to result in an offer of full-time employment after graduation.

College Highlights

BGSU's College of Health and Human Services was the first collegiate unit in northwest Ohio devoted exclusively to academic programs in health and human services. The physical therapy program is accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association.

There are 11 active student organizations with many connected to their national professional affiliation. Each major emphasizes hands-on opportunities through practical experiences and laboratory courses.

The college sponsors a Health Sciences Residential Community where students benefit from learning and socializing with other students taking similar classes, increased contacts with faculty in the health-science academic majors, and academic advising and career exploration that takes place within the residence hall.

High School Preparation

Students should follow a college preparatory program that includes four units (credits) of English, three units of college preparatory mathematics, three units of science (biology, chemistry, physics), three units of social studies, two units of the same foreign language and one unit of the visual or performing arts.
