MT (CLS) admission requirements

Applications for admission to the Medical technology program are available by October 1. Students who can complete all course requirements and obtain a grade point average of 2.5 (on the 4.0 scale) before the start of classes in May are eligible to apply. Applications may be picked up at the program office, or will be mailed upon receipt of your request by mail, email, or phone.

Students with Foreign Academic Records
Students with higher education credits earned outside the U.S. or Canada must have their transcripts authenticated and evaluated by the Office of International Studies, and by an independent agency approved by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or the National Certification Agency for Clinical Laboratory Personnel. One such agency is the International Education Research Foundation, P.O. Box 66940, Los Angeles, CA 90066.

Admission Criteria
The selection committee consists of the program faculty, laboratory manager, education coordinator, and representatives from the clinical affiliates. Established criteria are GPA (50%), Interviews (30%), References (5%), Biographic Information (5%), Interview Summary (10%).

The selection committee meets in early March to select candidates. Students are notified of the committee's decision in writing by March 30. The maximum capacity of the program depends upon availability of clinical sites (usually 16-17 students).

In addition to a GPA minimum of 2.5 and C or higher in core courses students must have the ability to perform the following visual and motor functions that must be used in order to produce reliable laboratory results.

Sufficient visual skill to read small print and labels
Color discrimination skills that permit identification of color changes and visual reading of color blocks
Ability to make adjustments in small dials and controls using the fingers
Sufficient hand to eye coordination to perform laboratory procedures (e.g., pipetting) and venipuncture (placing a needle into a vein)
