The Department offers approximately 55 teaching assistantships and several non-service fellowships. Assistantships for Masters students range from $9,200-$10,000 for the nine month academic year, and they are $12,000 for PhD students for the nine month academic year. Non-service fellowships are $13,000 for the calendar year. Summer support ranging from $1,370-$3,000 is also available. New and incoming students are encouraged to participate in our Summer Fellowship Program which begins the first week of July and carries a stipend of $1,800 for the six week session. In addition, all instructional, non-resident, general, and parking fees are waived for assistants and fellows.
About 95% of full-time graduate students are fully funded and all continuing graduate students requesting summer support received funding this past summer. Women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply (over 50% of our funded graduate students are women and/or minorities). Current graduate students find these Department assistantships ample for their year round expenses due to the low cost of living in Bowling Green.
All classes taught by the Department are small individual sections of 30 or fewer students -- we offer no large lecture classes. Teaching assistants are assigned small individual classes in calculus, pre-calculus, or statistics (MATH 130 and below). This involves four to six contact hours per week with undergraduate students.
Statistics students may seek a consultant's position at the University's Statistical Consulting Center. These positions provide valuable experience for those students preparing for careers in statistics. Stipends in the Statistical Consulting Center are the same as for teaching assistants.
