Graduate Programs in Mathematics Education
Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Bowling Green State University
Masters of Arts in Teaching in Mathematics
The M.A.T. degree program is designed for students who plan a teaching career
in the public schools, at a community college, or at a small four-year liberal
arts school. The program provides a large amount of flexibility so that each
individual student can pursue his/her particular career objectives. Coursework
involves graduate courses in mathematics, graduate courses in education, and
optionally, graduate-level courses in other departments such as computer
science, physics, or operations research.
Choice of courses is to be made upon consultation with the student's advisor.
If the student has career aspirations of working with remedial mathematics
students at the college level, he/she may wish to pursue some curriculum
courses. If the student wishes to become chair of a large mathematics
department in a high school, he/she may wish to pursue additional mathematics
courses, computer science courses, methodology courses, and supervision
courses. Choices of mathematics courses are left up to the advisor and
student; statistics, actuarial mathematics, linear algebra, real analysis,
numerical analysis, algebra, history of mathematics, history of calculus, and
differential equations are possibilities.
Program Requirements
- 21 to 27 semester hours of graduate mathematics courses, including one
semester of MATH 680;
- 8 to 13 semester hours in professional education, including EDCI 646;
- a minimum of 35 semester hours of graduate-level coursework with a
cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better;
- writing of a thesis and consequent passing of an oral examination on the
thesis OR successful completion of two written comprehensive examinations--one
in an area of mathematics and one in an area of mathematics education.
Mathematics Supervision Program
The two-year program in mathematics supervision leads to the degree of
Specialist in Education. It is designed for students who wish to pursue a
career as mathematics curriculum coordinators or mathematics specialists for
counties, or students who wish to pursue a career as a mathematics department
chair in a large secondary school.
Each applicant must have had at least three years of teaching experience,
preferably at different levels.
Program Requirements
- EDCI 641 and EDCI 646;
- EDCI 611; EDAS 621 and EDAS 625; EDFI 600, EDFI 642 and EDFI 671;
- at least 17 semester hours of graduate-level mathematics courses;
- MATH 796. Each candidate must complete an internship involving supervisory
work with school teachers in the field. This fieldwork must be for a minimum
of five semester hours spread over two semesters.
The Department
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics
has thirty-two permanent faculty
members. Research interests are varied, including several with interests in
mathematics education. The faculty in the department with interests in
mathematics education work closely with faculty in mathematics education in the
College of Education.
A weekly seminar in Mathematics Education brings together interested faculty
and graduate students from both colleges to discuss timely issues in
mathematics education.
