BOWLING GREEN - Florence S. Ogg, a retired mathematics teacher, and past president of the Bowling Green Women' s Club, the Church Street School PTA, the Shakespeare Round Table, and United Methodist Women, died Thursday in Wood County Nursing Home. She was 98.

Mrs. Ogg's death was due to heart failure, her daughter, Virginia Magada, said. She was a resident of the nursing home for nine years.

She was the widow of Dr. Frank C. Ogg, who taught mathematics at Bowling Green State University until his retirement in 1969. He died in 1976.

"She also taught mathematics for elementary and secondary teachers at BGSU. She completed all the course work for her doctorate, but she never finished," her son, Oscar, said.

Mr. Ogg said his parents typified traditional ways that have largely vanished from college campuses.

"He was the old-style professor, and she was the old-fashioned professor's wife. I don't think you can separate one from the other because they were an old-style couple with old-fashioned values. With them it was just assumed that you were to make the world a better place."

Mrs. Ogg grew up on a farm in southern Illinois, with her mother and grandmother, and was valedictorian of her class at Neoga High School, Neoga, Ill., in 1918. She taught in a country school near Neoga for a year for $50 monthly.

Mrs. Ogg decided to go to college, but she met with resistance from the townsfolk who wanted her to stay home and teach school, her daughter said. She graduated from Illinois State University with a major in astronomy and a minor in mathematics.

Mrs. Ogg taught school from 1923 to 1925 and received a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois, Champaign, Ill., in 1926. She completed the course work toward a PhD in mathematics there, but "she gave it up for dad and the five of us " Mrs. Magada said.

The couple married in 1928 and, three years later, moved to Bowling Green, where Mrs. Ogg took pride in her membership in the Shakespeare Round Table because her daughter said it is the "oldest continuing organization in Bowling Green," founded in 1906.

Mrs, Ogg was a past president of the Bowling Green chapter of the American Association of University Women, the United Methodist Women, Phi Mu Epsilon, Sigma Delta Kappa, and the Faculty Dames, now known as the University Women. She was a board member and a lay leader of First United Methodist Church, where she formerly. directed the Wesleyan Sunday school class.

Surviving Mrs. Ogg are her daughters, Virginia Magada and Florence Smith; sons, Oscar and Andrew; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

The body will be in the Dunn Funeral Home, Bowling Green, after 6 tonight. Services will be at 3 p.m. tomorrow in First United Methodist.
