Ohio-Project NExT

Report from Bernedette Mullins, National NExT Fellow, Youngstown State

Fall, 1997

Ohio Project NExT held its second meeting in conjunction with the MAA Ohio Section Fall Conference.

NExTers met for dinner and a two hour discussion about calculus reform and collaborative learning on Thursday evening.

Friday morning there were three sessions:

  1. Current research of NExT Fellows (three short talks)
  2. Maple Projects in Calculus by Judy Holdener
  3. Undergraduate Student Research by Aparna Higgins Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, the regular MAA meetings were held.

Personally, I thought all three NExT sessions were excellent. Judy gave lots of specific examples of Maple labs that she has developed and tested... I have already used (!) one of her handouts as of this morning (my multivariable calculus class was in our computer classroom today). Aparna's talk was fabulous (and was new to almost all of us). This is what I like best about Project NExT... it provides not only a forum for discussing timely topics of interest, but also a means for exchanging concrete teaching ideas that are of immediate practical value.

Many thanks go out to those who have supported Ohio NExT including Barbara Ashton, John Michel, Fred Rickey, Doug Faires, Aparna Higgins, NExT Fellows, all our speakers, Tom LaFramboise for organizing these talks, and Shawnee State University for hosting the meeting.
