Russian Program

on the Moscow River at Arkhangel'skoe
The Russian program offers many means of learning not only a fascinating
language but also the ways of life and arts of Russia. Knowledge of language and culture are key to understanding the people of Eurasia. BGSU
frequently hosts students, faculty and visitors from Russia. Students have plenty of opportunities to interact both
inside and outside of the classroom.
Career Opportunities
The need for individuals competent in Russian is expanding rapidly in
both the public and private sectors, and there is every indication that it
will continue to increase.Despite
opportunities opening up for Americans with Russian language skills, the
number of qualified persons is declining. Therefore, BGSU graduates with
Russian have good employment prospects.
Students are prepared for careers in such fields as intercultural
communications consulting, international office management, international
trade, law, library science, politics, teaching, translation and travel.
Some of these fields require additional professional training, but
international specialization in these fields is impossible without Russian
language and culture skills.
Curriculum
BGSU is the only public institution in northern Ohio to offer a full,
four-year course of study in Russian culture and language. The Russian
major provides a quality liberal arts education combined with language and
learning skills. Students are able to take advantage of many learning
facilities including excellent library, computer and Language Learning Center facilities. In comparison with others on a national scale, BGSU students
have recorded above-average performance on standardized Russian tests. Students receive individual attention
in and out of class.
Students can take courses with no previous
Russian knowledge or receive advanced placement if they have sufficient
background in the language. The four-year Russian language and culture core
features intermediate to advanced-level courses in reading, translation,
Russian for business and journalism. The program also has six culture and
literature courses- in English and Russian- a film and poetry course that
suit a variety of interests.
Special Features
An international business minor is offered through the College of
Business Administration for interested Russian majors. The minor requires
an additional 21-24 credit hours and includes courses such as Introduction
to Multinational Business, International Business Transactions,
International Marketing, International Trade and Finance and International
Financial Management.
The program encourages undergraduate research projects.
Students take part in
cultural and social events sponsored by the Russian Club, International Careers Network, and other organizations. BGSU also has a Dobro Slovo
National Slavic Honor Society chapter which inducts qualified juniors and
seniors.
