EFFECTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Before discussing different ways to use technology in language, we must first develop for ourselves a certain criteria of what it means to integrate effectice technology in your curriculm.

These answers vary depending on the situation. It is important to evaluate each class, and each assignment to determine what the answers are for you.

MAIN FUNCTIONS

Currently, the main uses for the LLC include:

  • Recording using Audacity
  • Accessing the sound files that accompany the book and workbook via our online web server
  • Watching videos put on reserve

DIGITAL PORTFOLIOS

Digital audio portfolios can consist of a multitude of assignments, such as:

  • personal reflections
  • recordings of students doing workbook activities
  • response to an audio (or video) stimulus
Recommendation: Be specific when assigning, such as "Record a three-minute response" and Save File as "Name_AudioJournal_1.mp3". Collect files in a folder named for the semester, and at the end of the semester you have a tangible record of how much improvement has been made over the course of the semester.

SOFTWARE

We are currently evaluating two of the leading language learning softwares on the market: Rosetta Stone and Tell Me More.

  • Rosetta Stone is a vocabulary intensive software designed to increase one's speaking ability as quickly as possible.
  • Tell me More is based more on syntax and grammar. And it also includes a voice recognition component.

We have already begun scheduling instructors and students to evaluate the programs. Please email me after the workshop if you are interested in evaluating one of these softwares.

WEBQUESTS

Interactive Webquests are fun, authentic ways to include technology into a lesson. We currently have multiple examples of Webquests on our Resource Links page:

Our goal is to have at least one webquest per language by Fall 08. Please contact me if you are interested in creating a Webquest for your language. We have some great resources to get your started.
