Introduction

In this webquest students are playing the role of a student who is studying abroad in Santiago, Chile. The tasks that each student is asked to do will cover comprehension in the areas of reading, listening, writing and speaking. The focus of each task, however, centers around verbs in the preterit tense and the student’s understanding and use of this tense.

Learners

First-year university students who have been introduced to and learned the preterit forms of verbs in Spanish, or the equivalent level of high school student (usually two semesters or more). Students attempting the webquest should be able to use verbs in the preterit to talk about something that happened in the past.

Curriculum Standards

Process

The first three steps of the webquest should be completed within a 50-minute class session, using the help of computers or a computer lab. It is suggested that work be done individually. The final step can be completed outside of class time as homework.

Resources Needed

The webquest utilizes a fabricated newspaper story, mp3 listening files, email communication and the use of cellular phones to complete the tasks. The use of computers or a computer lab is also required.

Conclusion

Students will interpret and comprehend a written text which emphasizes verbs in the preterit. They will also analyze three verbal/listening segments of conversations in Spanish in order to connect written information with spoken input. Students will then compose a written task which includes actions in the past. Finally, students will share information orally about what happened in the past by making a phone call to a “friend”.
