Task 4: Experience Salzburg!

Goals: acquaint the students with cultural aspects of the target language’s country, familiarize the students with handling authentic German newspaper writings, practice reading comprehension and writing in a practical application

Step 1
Apparently the “Christkindlmarkt” is a big part of the Christmas celebrations in Salzburg.  You’re in the first semester of your year abroad, Christmas is approaching, and you’ve heard a lot of hype about this Christkindlmarkt.  You want to learn what this is, and experience it.

Instructions:
You access the “Stadt Salzburg Online” (www.stadt-salzburg.at) and read the following article:

Am Salzburger Christkindlmarkt sind auch Nikolaus und Krampus präsent.  Am Freitag, 5. Dezember ab 17 Uhr 30 gibt es dort einen traditionellen Krampuslauf, heuer erstmals mit den Pongauer Krampussen. Am Samstag, 6. Dezember ab 15 Uhr 30 Uhr verteilt der Nikolaus kleine Geschenke und die Kinderkramperl laufen mit.  Der berühmteste Adventmarkt findet alljährlich vor dem Dom und der Residenz statt. Fünf Wochen vor Weihnachten öffnet der Markt auf dem Platz vor der atemberaubenden Kulisse des Doms seine Pforten. Dieser weltberühmte Salzburger Christkindlmarkt verspricht auch heuer wieder ein Genuss für alle Sinne zu sein.  Groß und Klein entdecken hier verschiedene Geschenke, Salzburger Spezialitäten, Naschereien und Christbaumschmuck. In speziell entworfenen hölzernen Marktständen bieten traditionellerweise die Kunsthandwerker, Zuckerbäcker und andere Händler ihre Waren feil.  Lebkuchenherzen, Krippenfiguren, Spielzeug und warme Pullover locken zum Kauf!

Now that you know what the Christkindlemarkt is, you decide to attend and excitedly want to call up your friend and tell them your plans.

Use Audacity to record your half of the telephone conversation.  Use the information from the article above to formulate specifically what you want to do, see, visit, etc.  You may use the future or conditional tense.  Make sure to be specific with what you want to do, and with which aspects of the Christkindlmarkt in particular you intend to experience and enjoy.
