The department offers a three-year language and culture program in Japanese. The College of Arts & Sciences awards B.A. degrees in Asian Studies with special emphasis on Japan and in other, related fields.

Why Study Japanese?

Are you interested in speaking the language of the people who make Toyota, Honda, and Mazda?

Are you interested in writing the language of the people who have developed such superb arts as Kabuki, wood block prints, and the tea ceremony?

Are you interested in the language of the people who are ranked as the third economic power of the world, even though their country is smaller than the state of California?

If you are, you should sign up for the Japanese program of the Department of German, Russian, East Asian languages at Bowling Green State University. An Arts Science student may take Japanese to fulfill his or her language requirement. A business student will acquire valuable language skills of the country with which the U. S. has extensive trade relations. Taking Japanese not only satisfies a language requirement but it could be the greatest asset to anyone's career background.

Program features

Qualified students may spend a year in Japan through the student exchange program. It is a great opportunity to learn the language and the culture intensively.

Students have the opportunities to participate in an internship program in Japan for six months at a Japanese company. This allows the students to experience Japanese business practices first-hand.

The department actively supports the Japanese Club, one of the multicultural student organizations on campus.

Students may take the opportunity to use an authentic Japanese tea ceremony room and Nakamoto Room for Japanese Studies at BGSU.

A two-week workshop on Japanese culture and the tea ceremony is offered during the summer school session.

Scholarships are available on a competitive basis through the Asian Studies Program.
