German Christmas at the Wood County Historical Museum

On 11 December 2007, Geoffrey Howes presented an overview of customs and Christmas goodies, and the museum's director, Christie Raber, showed slides of her family's traditional preparation of Springerle cookies. They use wooden cookie molds that have been in the family since the late 18th century.

About thirty people attended, including people from the town and county, university colleagues (Marilyn Shrude, John Sampen, and Elmer Spreitzer), students (Tyler Wittenmyer and his mother Suzy were there), and long-time friend of the German program Gene Schumacher.

After the presentations, guests were able to sample Christie's Springerle as well as PfeffernŸsse, Christstollen, Lebkuchen, and mulled cider.

The Dzidra Shllaku Scholarship Fund

A group of alumni that participated in the first AYA program in Salzburg has pledged substantial resources over the next three years to institute a scholarship fund for AYA Salzburg participants in financial need. The alumni have requested that the fund be named in honor of Dr. Dzidra Shllaku, the first AYA Salzburg director. Dr. Shllaku taught was on the department faculty from 1959 to 1985 and continued to teach courses into the 1990s. The formal announcement of the fund's institution was made at the thirtieth anniversary celebration in Salzburg on 18 June by alumni group member Steven Harris. A formal announcement about the fund was also made at a reception at the department on 30 October. Among alumni group members attending the reception were Lana Chadwick, Eric Moore, Susan Mendizza, William Weis, Larry Snavely, and Dallas Hull. University Provost Dr. Charles Middleton greeted the alumni. On the following day, 31 October, almuni and guests gathered at Dr. Shllaku's home in Rossford, Ohio for a wonderful evening. The German Program students and faculty sincerely thank the donors to the fund. Alumni and guests.
