Prerequisites

One year of BGSU Chinese language and culture study (CHIN 101–102) or the equivalent is recommended; however, if there are enough applicants with no prior knowledge of Mandarin, then a class for beginners will be formed. This class will be the equivalent of CHIN 101 (4 cr.).

Academic Credit

Academic credit for language learning (3 cr.) will be awarded based upon prior knowledge of Chinese and successful completion of classes at XiĠan International Studies University. Three credits in Chinese culture is also part of the program.

Language classes meet daily on the campus of XISU. Classes are taught by members of the XISU School of Chinese Studies.

There will be at least weekly presentations in English on Chinese culture and excursions in XiĠan and the region.

Class attendance and participation in excursions is mandatory. It is part of the coursework at XISU.

Other Travel

Program participants will spend two days in Beijing upon their arrival in China. There they will visit some of the important points of cultural interest in the city. Guides will help the group from the time it arrives at the airport until departure for XiĠan by air.

Air Travel

Participants must purchase their own tickets to arrive in Beijing on the same day. Airfare to China this year costs somewhat more than in previous years because of the upcoming Olympic Games. Options, including for group travel, will be discussed at the first orientation meeting.

Housing

XiĠan International Studies University will provide rooms in the student hotel on campus.

Meals

Participants will dine in the foreign student cafeteria. Program directors will help students learn about other dining options in the area. Off-campus dining and grocery purchases are not covered by the program budget, except on excursions.

Excursions

There will be excursions in the city of XiĠan and in the region to places of cultural and historic interest, such as the Muslim quarter of the city, a institute specializing in athletic training, markets, the theater, and so forth.
