Gerhard Kofler
Writer in Residence 2001
The Max Kade Writer in Residence at Bowling Green State University in the Fall of 2001 was Gerhard Kofler. Born in Italy, Kofler studied German philology and Romance languages and literature at Innsbruck and Salzburg. He wrote poetry and essays in both Italian and German and received numerous prizes and fellowships. His works include numerous publications in anthologies and periodicals, contributions to broadcasting stations, and co-authorship of two poetry CDs. His publications include Die Trilogie des Kalenders / Trilogia del Calendario (Innsbruck: Haymon, 1996-1999), which were translated into English by BGSU professor Dr. Geoffrey Howes. Poesie di mare e terra / Poesie von Meer und Erde (2000) and Poesie di mare, terra e cielo / Poesie von Meer, Erde und Himmel (2003) were published by the Wieser Verlag in Klagenfurt. More recently, Haymon in Innsbruck published the poetry volume Soliloquio d'autunno / Selbstgespräch im Herbst (2005; also translated by Dr. Howes), and the Wieser Verlag published the collection of poems Trilogia nuova antica / Trilogie neu antik (2006). Kofler lived in Vienna as a writer, literary critic and secretary general of the Grazer Autorenversammlung (a writers' union founded in the Austrian town of Graz in 1973) until he passed away in November, 2005.
