Peter Rosei is one of the most distinguished contemporary writers in the German language. Born in Vienna in 1946, Rosei studied law at the University of Vienna and earned his doctorate in 1968. He spent a year and a half as the personal secretary of the Viennese painter Ernst Fuchs, and later became the director of a textbook publishing house. Since 1972 he has lived as a freelance writer in Vienna. From 1973-78 he was a member of the Grazer Autorenversammlung, which he left in 1978 together with H. C. Artmann and Helmut Eisendle. For years he traveled extensively and intensively. In 1975 he moved to Bergheim near Salzburg. In 1979-80 he was a guest of the Hamburger Artists’ Program. He has been a guest writer at Oberlin College, Bowling Green State University, and the University of New Mexico at Taos.
