Undergraduate Program

Major Requirement for New BGSU Students (those entering Fall 2012 or later):

Ethnic Studies students must complete 4 required courses and 7 elective courses (21 hours, at the appropriate course level) for a total of 33 hours.  Students are also required to select a minor. Majors will take the four required courses with other students from the units in the School of Cultural and Critical Studies (CCS) which includes American Culture Studies, Popular Culture, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.  These interdisciplinary CCS courses are designed to bring together the diverse knowledge and skills our majors have acquired and to prepare them for life after BGSU.  In these courses, students will learn cultural studies theories and research methods, create their own research project, and engage in service-learning.

• CCS 3710: Gender, Race & Culture in Community-Based Practice
• CCS 4850: Qualitative Research Methods
• CCS 4860: Capstone Seminar

Major Requirements for Students Entering Prior to Fall 2012:

Ethnic Studies students will complete 33 hours of major requirements and a minor.

• Select one introductory course from (3 hours): ETHN 1010, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1600;

• Select one 2000-level course (3 hours): ETHN 2010, 2110, 2200, 2300, 2600;

• Select two 3000-level courses (6 hours): ETHN 3000, 3010, 3050/WS 3050, 3030, 3040, 3100, 3120, 3170/HIST 3170, 3200, 3400, 3510, 3610;*

• Select three 4000-level courses (9 hours): ETHN 4020/HIST 4020, 4030/HIST 4030, 4040/HIST 4040, 4100, 4150, 4200, 4250, 4300, 4350, 4400, 4600, 4700, 4800, 4890;*

• Select two “cognate” courses (6 hours) as approved by Advisor from the following list: ACS 2500, ECON 3230, ECON 4400, ENG 3100, ENG 4240, ENVH 2100, GEOG 3250, GEOG 4260, HDFS 4080, HIST 3100, HIST 3110, HIST 3140, HIST 3150, HIST 3190, HIST 3260, HIST 3810, HIST 4110, HIST 4130, HIST 4320, IPC 4080, JOUR 4550, PHIL 2170, PHIL 2240, POPC 1700, SOC 3150, SOC 3170, SOC 4190, and SPAN 4010;

• Complete ETHN 4850 and ETHN 4860 (6 hours)*
* Students can substitute CCS 4850 and CCS 4860 for ETHN 4850 and ETHN 4860


Minor (21 hours)

Ethnic Studies minors will take a total of 21 hours of Ethnic Studies courses selected in consultation with the School Advisor. These must include one 3000-level course and two 4000-level courses.
