ENVS 470 - Environmental Studies Independent Study

(1-3 Credit Hours on Demand)

 

Independent Readings/Research in Environmental Studies (1-3). Independent readings or research on topics of current or specialized interest in environmental studies. May include library, laboratory or field work. Prerequisites: consent of instructor. May be repeated to a maximum of six hours.

All readings or research study projects must be planned during the semester preceding that in which the work will take place. All appropriate signatures must be obtained and a 1- to 2-page typed description of the project that will be completed for credit must be attached. If more than one student is working on a joint project, the work each will do must be clearly stated. The ENVS 470 section must be created during the first week of the semester during which credit will be received. In case of an emergency, an appeal may be made to the curriculum committee before the 7th week of the semester. However, late applications will receive no more than 2 credits. All projects should involve readings or research that relate to the student's course of study or chosen career. The credits earned will apply to the Area of Emphasis.

Grading -- The work will be letter graded.

Supervision -- The student's work will be supervised and evaluated by an instructor at BGSU with expertise in the subject. No grade wil be given until the final evaluation is in the office of the Center for Environmental Programs.

Readings requirements --
1. A paper of at least 10 pages for each credit hour with full documentation and based on inquiry into a specific topic on which the student and faculty supervisor agree.
2. An outline of the readings and list of source material will be due by the 4th week of the semester.
3. A rough draft of the paper will be due by the 8th week of the semester.
4. The final paper will be due during the last week of classes.
5. An oral or written exam over the assigned material may be required by the instructor.

Research requirements --
1. A project of short duration may be planned, carried out, and written up in similar fashion to the readings paper, although shorter.
2. Library research into relevant studies must be done and outlined prior to beginning the project.
3. Data analysis and a rough draft of the paper will be due by the 12th week (3/4 of the semester) of classes.
4. The final paper will be due the last week of classes.

Credit Hours
Normally an independent study project will be approved for 1 to 3 credit hours.

note: failure to complete one or more of the above requirements
will result in an unsatisfactory grade.
