We offer two undergraduate degrees from the
College of Arts & Sciences:

1 Environmental Science (leading to a Bachelor of Science degree)

  • Environmental Science is the study of the biological and physical world as it is affected by natural and man-made activities. It is a field that has become increasingly important as population pressures have forced us to recognize our responsibilities for pollution, resource depletion, and land abuse.
  • Environmental Science at BGSU places priority on the natural sciences. Students develop the skills needed to investigate, document, and solve environmental problems.
  • Although natural sciences are emphasized in this program, especially biology and chemistry, courses in the social sciences and humanities are also required so that the students can better understand the interrelationships that characterize sensitive environmental issues.
  • This program is planned by students with the help of their advisor. They select an area of emphasis and take a series of advanced courses in such fields as restoration ecology, chemical analysis, geographic information systems, and wildlife conservation.
  • Graduates qualify for positions in water resource planning, biological and chemical testing, public health and energy systems design, among others.

2 Environmental Policy and Analysis (leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree).
  • The Environmental Policy and Analysis program was developed for students with a commitment to environmental quality and an interest in the administrative, legislative and organizational problems that have resulted from the impact of human activities on the natural and constructed world.
  • Environmental policy analysts work with issues such as changing patterns of environmental use, protection of the wilderness, restoration of land following resource recovery and preservation of unique areas and endangered species.
  • Students majoring in Environmental Policy and Analysis take more courses in geography, economics, and political science, because this planned program appoaches environmental issues from the viewpoint of the social sciences, although courses in the natural sciences are also required.
  • An area of emphasis keyed to career goals is planned by the students with their advisor's assistance in environmental planning, management and administration, outdoor recreation , environmental education, or other appropriate field.
  • Graduates are often employed as environmental organization administrators, planners, park rangers, technical report writers, naturalists, recreation leaders and more.
