  INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

Environmental health issues do not stop at political borders. Water, air and land pollution often travel freely, and effective management must include working with people from around the world. Much of our coursework includes consideration of international conditions and issues. Of particular importance is Global Commons: International Perspectives on Environmental Health and Protection (ENVH 210). This course focuses on the relationship between culture, environmental conditions and international relationships around the world. The course satisfies a university general education requirement in the social sciences and in international perspectives.

We offer an educational exchange program with the University of Veszprém in Hungary. This provides an outstanding opportunity to experience central Europe while gaining perspective on environmental issues. We also can arrange for students interested in environmental health to study abroad in other countries of interest.

Some good sources of information on international environmental health are listed below.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has major programs helping protect and enhance public health throughout the world. A major part of its effort is in environmental health. Particularly in the developing world, there is opportunity for tremendous benefit through implementation of easily available environmental health interventions.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) maintains an active program to help countries throughout Latin America provide infrastructure and services required by the population to meet their basic environmental health needs.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is a leading source of information on global and local environmental conditions. Its web sites and publications are extremely valuable sources of data.

The International Federation of Environmental Health is a professional association working to link environmental health professionals around the world. With most of its work published in English, it provides an outstanding opportunity for professionals in the United States to learn about and work with colleagues from many different countries and regions.
