E&S Minors
ACADEMIC MINORS
The Department offers three minors to enhance students’ opportunities in their majors and to recognize understanding of specialized environmental knowledge.
Environmental Health – focusing on the relationship between environmental quality and human health.
Environmental Policy and Analysis – for those interested in the administrative, legislative and organizational problems resulting from human impacts.
Environmental Science – examines the natural world as it is affected by human activities and offers opportunity for human use.
Please see below for curricular requirements for each minor. Also of interest may be the minor in Sustainability.
Environmental Health learning outcomes are for students to achieve understanding of:
- a foundation science and an understanding of the scientific process
- major environmental health societal and large-scale issues
- fundamentals of community environmental health practice
- social aspects of implementing environmental health practices
- one of the technical areas central to environmental health
Required Courses (22 hours of course work):
- 10 credit hours of foundational sciences, to consist of either BIOL 204 and BIOL 205, or CHEM 125, CHEM 127 and CHEM 128
- 9 credit hours of foundational environmental health courses to consist of
ENVH 210, ENVH 301, and ENVH 306 - 3 credit hours of an advanced environmental health course to consist of either
ENVH 407 or ENVH 449 (Please note that these courses have prerequisites.
Environmental Policy and Analysis learning outcomes are for students to achieve understanding of:
- foundational material in biology, and geology or geography
- the breadth of current critical environmental issues facing the planet
- two topical areas of critical importance to environmental quality.
- disciplines in the social sciences and humanities critically linked to environmental studies
Required Courses (27-30) hours of course work):
- 6-8 credit hours of foundational biology and geography or geology to consist of one course from biology and one course from geography or geology.
- 3 credit hours of foundational environmental studies to consist of ENVS 1010 or 2530
- 4-6 credit hours focusing on specialized aspects of environmental studies to consist of two of the following courses: ENVS 3010, ENVS 4000, ENVS 4010, ENVS 4020, ENVS 4030, ENVS 4120, ENVS 4930, ENVS 4950
- 6 credit hours providing background on the political and legal systems to consist of two of the following courses: POLS 3310, POLS 3360, POLS 3450; LEGS 4310
- 3 credit hours providing background in environmental philosophy, sociology or geography to consist of one of the following courses: PHIL 3320; SOC 3120; GEOG 3210, GEOG 3250, GEOG 3310
- 3 credit hours focusing on environmental history and culture to consist of one of the following courses: ACS 3380, HIST 3380

- the breadth of current critical environmental issues facing the planet
- select scientific disciplines critical to comprehensive understanding of environmental issues
- three topical areas of critical importance to environmental quality.
Required Courses (21-25 hours of course work):
- 3 credit hours of foundational environmental studies to consist of ENVS 1010 or 2530
- 9-10 credit hours credit hours of foundational natural science to consist of two of the following three courses: BIOL 2040, CHEM 1250, GEOL 1040 (9-10)
- 9 – 12 credit hours focusing on specialized aspects of environmental science to consist of three of the following courses (including at least one course with a ENVS designation): ENVS 3010, ENVS 3100 or ENVS 4150, ENVS 3340, ENVS 4010, ENVS 4020, ENVS 4120, ENVS 4200, ENVS 4930, ENVH 3040, ENVH 4020, GEOL 3220, GEOL 3230
