I.  MASTER'S CREDIT: 30 hours

II. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT:

(Note: the Ph.D. language requirement must be satisfied before the preliminary exams may be scheduled.)

III. DOCTORAL COURSE WORK: Minimum 33 hours. But coursework, examination and dissertation hours must total 60 hours.

6020 (required of all first-year teaching assistants) does not count toward required hours. 

RHETORIC AND WRITING CORE COURSES: 24 hours
6210 Intro to Rhetoric and Composition as a Discipline
7220 History of Rhetoric and Written Discourse
7230 Issues in Historical Rhetoric
7240 Rhetoric of Written Discourse
7260 Research in Rhetoric & Writing
7280 Computer Mediated Writing
7290 Publication in Rhetoric and Writing
7800 at least one special-topic seminar.

Note: As the core of the program, these eight courses may not be waived or substituted

RHETORIC & WRITING ELECTIVES: 9-15 hrs required

Students take three to five additional Rhetoric & Writing Program Courses (depending on whether they need to take ENG 6070 and 6150).  Students may take more electives if they wish.  Example courses: 6200, additional 7800s, other special-topic R&W courses, Readings courses, Research Group, Practicum.  A course emphasizing advanced writing pedagogy is recommended. 

Note: This is the standard elective approach, one intended to help students develop strong backgrounds in a complex field.

Option 2: Students with MAs in composition and rhetoric may, with faculty approval, take cognate courses (up 12 hours) relevant to their research or teaching interests (e.g.: courses in Technical Writing, Literature, Women’s Studies, Speech Communication, Ethnic Studies, Higher-Education).

IV. REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS AND DISSERTATION HOURS: 19-27 hours

___ENG 7980 Study for Prelims (3-6 hours) Candidate may count up 6 hours of credit for preliminary exam preparation.

___ENG 7990 Dissertation Research (16-21 hours) Candidate must accumulate a minimum of 16 hours of dissertation credit and may count a maximum of 21 toward graduation. (All graduating candidates must be registered for at least one dissertation research credit hour in the semester in which graduation is scheduled.)
