Research Interests: The nature of scholarship in composition studies, faculty work and its evaluation, writing pedagogy, writing across the curriculum, writing and department administration.

John Gerber 20th Century Leadership Award, 2000.  Presented by the Conference on College Composition and Communication to six individuals who--through their teaching, professional leadership, and mentoring of scholars, teachers and administrators--made major contributions to the furtherance of CCCC and its objectives during the first fifty years of the organization.

Richard Braddock Award, 1978.  Award for the outstanding article on rhetoric and composition in any 1977 publication of National Council of Teachers of English. "Balancing Theory with Practice in the Training of Writing Teachers," CCC, May 1977.

Service:
