Students also need at least 27 hours (9 courses) of literature electives, distributed according to the table below. No more than 12 hours may be at the 200-level. At least 6 hours must be at the 400 level.

Topics courses: ENG 423, ENG 470, and ENG 480 may be added to the cells in the table depending on the topic of the course. ENG 424 Topics in Multiethnic American Literature; ENG 211 African-American Literature; ENG 212 Native American Literature. These courses will always fill a cell in the American Literature row; the time period will be based on the topic of the offering. Please consult an advisor for proper placement of a topics course.

Special Studies Option: A maximum of two non-literature courses may be substituted for literature electives. These must be approved by the English advisor and require a course substitution form. An exception must be recorded in DARS. These courses will typically fall in the Other row/column.
