The Student Organization of Social Workers (S.O.S.W.) is an organization consisting mostly of pre-social work and social work
majors, although all majors are welcome! The purpose of this organization is to promote, support, and assist in the management
of the educational program of social work, to expand on classroom experience in the area of human service professions, and
to promote new friendship and unity among the members of the S.O.S.W.
The members of S.O.S.W. participate in various community service activities through the academic year. These activities include:
attending weekly meetings, conducting fund raisers for worthy causes such as disaster relief, supplementing the treasury (also
through fund raising activities), and participation in community service projects in the area. For example, each year the
organization has "adopted" a different family at Christmas. For this the S.O.S.W. purchased gifts and donated several boxes
of food. These projects have been a great success!
In addition to the feeling of satisfaction that a member of S.O.S.W. gains, there are other membership benefits. The organization
is an ideal means by which relationships with fellow peers in the helping professions can be formed. The weekly meetings provide
an outlet for voicing questions or concerns about the social work program, becoming aware of the requirements for major status,
and increasing familiarity with the wide range of service areas within the social work field. Also, from time to time the
organization invites speakers from different agencies in the area to come speak to us, This an excellent educational and networking
opportunity!
Not a pre-social work or social work major? The organization can provide you with an excellent opportunity to make a difference
in your community and meet new people who care about making a difference too!
