
Lawrence Coates, Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Literature. He grew up in El Cerrito, California. Before beginning college, he served in the Coast Guard and in the Merchant Marine, sailing aboard buoy tenders, oil tankers, and oceanographic research vessels. He holds a B.A. from The University of California at Santa Cruz, an M.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah. His fiction and nonfiction have appeared in various publications, including Missouri Review, Blue Mesa Review, Long Story, Chicago Tribune, and Santa Clara Review. His first novel, The Blossom Festival, was published in 1999 by University of Nevada Press. It was selected for Barnes & Nobles’ “Discover Great New Writers” program, and it went on to win a Utah Book Award and the Western States Book Award in fiction. His second novel, The Master of Monterey, was published in 2003. Dr. Coates has been editor of Quarterly West and a member of the board of Writers at Work, an annual writers conference. Prior to coming to Bowling Green State University, he taught at Southern Utah University.
