An undergraduate student who wishes to appeal a grade
received in a computer science course should contact the
department's Undergraduate Advisor to initiate the process. A
graduate student who wishes to appeal a grade received in a
computer science course should contact the department's
Graduate Coordinator to initiate the process.
The following procedures are used to appeal a grade received
for a course in the Department of Computer Science:
- The student who wishes to appeal a grade for a course
must submit to the Appeals Committee a written statement
explaining why the grade received is considered
unsatisfactory.
-
The student and instructor will submit the following
material and information to the committee:
- All papers used in determining the grade.
- Class distribution of grades and the method
used in determining grades for the class.
- The committee will evaluate the student's performance
by studying the material and information submitted. If
deemed necessary, the committee may call a meeting with
either the student or the instructor.
- The committee will recommend to the involved faculty
member that the grade be raised, be lowered, or remain
unchanged. This recommendation will also be passed on to
the student submitting the appeal, the Chair of the
Computer Science Department, and the Dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences.
- The department's Undergraduate Committee will serve as
the Appeals Committee for undergraduate student appeals.
The department's Graduate Committee will serve as the
Appeals Committee for graduate student appeals. If the
involved faculty member is a member of the Appeals
Committee, the department Chair will appoint a substitute
for the deliberations. University policy does not permit
department Chairs to serve on appeal committees. If the
department Chair is a member of the Committee serving as an
Appeals Committee, s/he will appoint a substitute.
