- Class Registration Policy
- Summer: Any student with an assistantship must
register for at least six semester hours of
graduate-level coursework related to your program.
This six hours must include at least one
classroom-based class. The following are not
included in the six hour minimum requirement for
summer: CS 5830, CS 5890, undergraduate courses,
audit courses, unapproved non-CS courses.
Fall/Spring: Any student with an assistantship must
register for at least twelve semester hours of
graduate-level coursework related to your program.
These twelve hours must include at least two
classroom-based classes. The following can be
included in the twelve-hour total:
• CS courses at the 5000 or 6000 level can
always be included.
• Graduate courses outside of CS can be taken
as part of the 12-hour requirement if related to
your MS program and approved by the Graduate
Coordinator.
• For international students, English courses
that are required as a result of your placement
exam can be included.
• For international students, ENG 5060 can be
taken as part of the 12-hour requirement, whether
or not required as a result of the placement exam.
• Either CS 5830 or CS 5890 can be included as
part of the 12-hour requirement
If you want to take undergraduate courses, courses
not related to the MS degree, or audit courses, you
can do that in addition to the 12-hour
requirement.
- Attendance Policy
-
Your assistantship contract with BGSU requires
you to be on campus as scheduled throughout each
semester. You are required to be on campus as of
the first day of each semester and to remain on
campus through the end of your obligations for
that semester (excluding official holiday
periods). This means that you need to be present
for your latest-scheduled final exam. Faculty in
the Department of Computer Science do not give
early final exams so that you can leave campus
before the scheduled final exam time.
In addition, some assistantships require you
to be on campus through Friday of final exam
week, but some do not have this requirement.
Check with your assistantship supervisor to see
if this requirement applies to you.
Students who depart before the approved date
at the end of a semester, or who return after the
start of the following semester, may forfeit
their assistantship.
This is a serious contractual obligation. You
should make no travel plans that conflict with
your assistantship requirements as specified in
this policy.
- Excerpt from Graduate Assistantship
Contract
-
Because academic success is the primary goal
of graduate study, graduate assistants are
discouraged from working more than 20 hours per
week, including the assistantship assignment,
when classes are in session. Graduate assistants
should confer with their graduate coordinators
before accepting additional employment.
United States Citizens, nationals and
lawful permanent residents of the US are not
limited to the number of hours per week they can
work on campus. However, the Immigration and
Naturalization Service (INS) limits international
students with F-1 and J-1 visas to 20 hours work
per week on campus while school is in session.
During official school break periods, students
with F-1 and J-1 visas may work full-time.
Student employees are responsible for complying
with employment policies of BGSU and the
INS.
