Many CS faculty use a "turn-in" folder on CS
Classes to allow students to submit solutions to
assigned work. If security is set up properly,
students will be able to drag files or folders to the
turn-in folder without being able to view the
contents of any submitted file or folder. They will
be able to see the contents of the turn-in folder to
confirm that the work has been submitted.
These are the steps for creating a turn-in folder
for your class:
- Create a folder within your CS Classes username
folder and give it an appropriate name (e.g. CS
1010 Turn-In").
- Right click on the turn-in folder and select
Properties, then click on the Security tab.
- Click the Advanced button, then uncheck the box
that has a long sentence starting with "Inherit". A
dialog will come up asking you if you want to Copy
or Remove the permissions. Select Copy. If you
select Remove it will wipe out all the permissions
so DON'T DO THIS.
- Click OK to go back to the original security
dialog. Now you should see that the permissions are
no longer grayed out.
- Remove "Grad Assistants" from the list.
- In the list of groups, you should see one
called itslabs. If you don't see it, click on the
Add button and type "itslabs" in the text box and
click OK.
- Click on the itslabs group and set the
permissions to be "list Folder Contents" and
"Write". Uncheck all other options.
- Click on the "Authenticated Users" group and
set the permissions to be "list Folder Contents"
and "Write". Uncheck all other options.
- If you want your graduate assistant to have
full access to the folder, you need to give access.
Suppose the grad assistant's username is tsmith.
Click the Add button, type "tsmith" in the text
box, and click OK.
- Click on the grad assistant's username and
check the box "Full Control" in the Allow
column.
- Click OK to close the Security window
This should get the correct settings for a lab
turn in folder. If you want to test you can try the
machine in Hayes 233 (classroom image) or visit the
FSG lab.
