BGSU Forensics, Speech and Debate Team - December 2006

On December 2-3, 2006, the BGSU Forensics, Speech and Debate Team ended its 2006 season on a high note by splitting the team between two tournaments. A small team headed south, participating in a tournament at Otterbein College, where the team placed two events in final rounds against the current national champion team, Western Kentucky University as well as other national powerhouses, Illinois State University, Creighton University and University of Florida. Senior, Sarah Smith earned her way to finals in Communication Analysis and the novice pairing of Jennifer Myers and Alex D’Ettorre did the same in DUO Interpretation.

A second, group took the road north to the University of Wisconsin-Stout, placing second as a team behind the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. BGSU fell just points shy of topping the tournament with only 24 events entered against Eau Claire’s 41, while defeating Texas Southern University who entered 75 events at the tournament. Of BGSU’s 24 events, 17 made it to final rounds, with every member of the BGSU squad placing in at least two finals. Junior Kenny Rogers, lead the team with his first place finish in Oral Interpretation of Poetry. Freshman, Maryellen Jacks and Junior, Michelle Baker both earned finals placements in 100% of the events they entered in the tournament. “This was a very positive experience for the team as it has been some time since we competed in the northern region.” noted Director of Forensics, Paul Wesley Alday.

BGSU kicks off 2007 with a pair of tournaments at Butler University and Kent State University, both hosted in Indiana, before returning to Montreal to defend their 6th Collegiate Forensics Association title. Alday is optimistic about their chances for a “six-peat” in 2007, noting, “This year we have a talented and highly motivated group of students in the BGSU program. With talent and desire anything is possible.”
