COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & OUTREACH

BGSU Forensics & Debate supports outreach and engagement, offering the opportunity for students to take forensics beyond the competitive arena to the community.  Forensics members serve as a resource and tutor pool for departmental instructors of our public speaking courses and deliver sample speeches and performances for other campus departments ranging from Theatre & Film to Public Policy Analysis and Criminal Justice.  Team members serve as coaches and judges for high school speech programs. Falcon Forensics members have and continue to serve as representatives and to sponsor community workshops through the Ohio Forensic Association and Pi Kappa Delta National Convention.  Students recently completed a campus beautification project, adding plantings to the landscaping around West Hall.  The program sponsored "Performing Good Deeds: A Benefit for the Katrina Relief Fund", on campus performances of Eve Ensler's "Vagina Monologues" and assisted collaboratively with performances developed with the Horizon Youth Theatre.  Annually, through service engagements ranging from community readings and performances at the Wood County Library to benefits for the MPS Society and Make a Wish Foundation, forensics members lend their voice in support of a better community.

TOURNAMENT OFFERINGS

Falcon Forensic Classic Tournament
The Bowling Green State University Forensics, Speech & Debate Team and Ohio Eta Chapter of Pi Kappa Delta (PKD) host our 65th annual “Falcon Forensic Classic” Tournament on Saturday, November 15, 2008. Yes, at BGSU, the early bird does get the worm! … and has ever since we first started hosting I.E. tournaments back in 1943! Though the names and dates have changed, the spirit is the same. In addition to the fun and early forensics experience, we offer open competition in all IE-events, the NFA Experimental Event and LD Debate as well as top novice & PKD awards per event.

Oberlin College "Yeoman" Tournament
In 2007, Falcon Forensics forged a collaborative "swing tournament" with Oberlin College, making the Falcon Classic part of a two day campus event.  Free and open to all campus and community members, the Falcon N. Yeoman Swing Tournament attracts colleges and universities from an eight state region and serves as an observational opportunity for all Bowling Green students and community members. This years tournament follows the Falcon Classic on Sunday, November 16, 2008.

BGSU Theme Tournament
BGSU is proud to offer one of the only all student run theme tournaments in the nation.  From "Pirates of the Competition" to The Superhero Thwack Bang Pow Tournament" to this year's "Get-A-Clue Mystery Tournament", our theme event offers a blending of fun and high quality forensic competition.  Impromptu quotations on the theme, costumed hosts, creative awards and a fun themed environment make this tournament one of the most popular of the season.  This year's tournament is Saturday, February 28, 2009.

SHOWCASES
Each year the Forensics, Speech and Debate Team and Pi Kappa Delta co-sponsor one event showcase per term, free admission, open to the campus community and general public. These performance showcases blend media presentation with outstanding speeches and interpretations from the season.  This year we offer two outstanding events:

7:00 pm, November 5, 2008 “A Showcase of ONE”
McFall Center Gallery, Bowling Green State University Main Campus

7:00 pm, March 25, 2009 “An Evening of Champions”
Gish Film Theatre, Bowling Green State University Main Campus

BGSU Forensics Institute
Seeing the need for a high quality, affordable summer forensics institute, BGSU is developing a summer experience for high school students wishing to develop their skills and events.  The institute will feature sessions by award winning coaches and college participants.  More information coming soon!
