This reminds me of some specialized detectors for insect pheromones.
The detector is the disconnected antenna of an insect connected to an
electronic amplifier. This is placed in the exit port of a GC.
Great signals for selected species.
A little tough on the insect that provided the detector element.
Also, relatively short lifetime for the detector element,
but they are often quite inexpensive.
(Inexpensive to us that is, not to the insect.)
