Summer School Information

(last edited: October 7, 2000 -- page is designated advisor/summer_courses.htm)

BGSU offers a number of chemistry courses during summer session:

General Chemistry 125 (lecture, lab) -- 5 hr.

General Chemistry 127 (lecture) -- 4 hr.

General Chemistry Lab 128 -- 1hr

Introductory Chemistry (lecture)--110

Introductory Chemistry Lab 111

Organic Chemistry 341 (lecture, lab)-- 5 hr

Organic Chemistry 342 (lecture, lab)-- 5hr

Organic Chemistry 306 (lecture, lab)-- 4 hr

Elementary Biochemistry 308 (lecture)-- 3hr

Biochemistry Lab 309 -- 1 hr.

Chem. 413 Undergraduate Research (1-9 hrs)

We also note that Physics 201-202 is offered in the summer.

This may be valuable to chemistry majors who did not take Physics during their sophomore year.

The published schedule will automatically list Chem.. 395 (Workshops) and Chem.. 313 (Special Topics.) However, you cannot enroll for these unless a specific workshop or special topics course has been listed or advertised. (As of October 2000 there are no workshops or special topics courses planned for summer 2001.)

Some students find summer courses are a means of getting back on a normal schedule... or of providing additional flexibility in the academic year schedule. Others enroll in summer courses to be able to graduate in less than 4 full years.

Be warned... taking two 15 week courses (like 125-127-128 or 341-342) in a single summer session (12 weeks) is a full time commitment. These courses move at a rapid pace and you have to stay current or you will get lost.

You may choose to take similar summer course at other institutions near your home and transfer the credit to BGSU. Most schools offer summer courses in General Chemistry. Many offer a year of Organic Chemistry. You may be able to find an Analytical Chemistry offering comparable to Chem. 201. There are only a few schools in the region that offer summer courses in Physical Chemistry or Biochemistry. Most schools list their summer offerings on line.

It is a good idea to ask your advisor to review the course description to make sure that the course is comparable to the required BGSU course.
