The BGSU Chemistry Program
- Is fully accredited by the American Chemical Society
- Offers the Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry
- a Specialization in Biochemistry is offered
- Offers the Master's Degree in chemistry
- Offers a PhD Degree through the Center for Photochemcial Sciences
The BGSU Chemistry Department office is in Overman Hall (room 138)
-
Overman Hall includes
- Teaching Laboratories
- General Chemistry, (Overman 122, 124)
- Honors Chemistry and Quantitative Analysis (Overman 145)
- Physical / Analytical and Associated Instrumentation (Overman 26, 28)
- A computer lab for Chemistry Students (Overman 24) and computer workstations used mainly for molecular calculations and molecular graphics (Overman 125)
- Teaching Assistant Help area (Overman 125)
- typically staffed 9:30-4:30 M-Tu-W-Th and 9:30-1:30 F
- Several Departmental offices and the Center for Photochemical Sciences
- Chair's Office (Dr. Snavely)
- Two conference rooms
- A Darkroom
- A Glassblowing Shop
- An electronics shop (two full time technicians)
- A machine shop (one full time machinist)
- SAACS Meeting Area/ student lounge
- Several Faculty Offices (Endres, DenBesten, Neckers, Mejeritskaia, Hammond)
- Lecture Hall (Overman 123) used for many chemistry courses, most seminars
The Chemistry Department Also Occupies Most of the
Physical Sciences Building
- Includes most faculty offices
- Most research laboratories
- Many specific Instrumentation facilities
- IR spectrometers, NMR, GC-MS
- Teaching Labs in Biochemistry
- Teaching Labs in Organic Chemistry
The
Mathematics / Science Building
- Has a high field NMR Facility and technician's office
- Also has a prep room for the lecture hall which serves most large chem. lectures
Chemical Storage Building is a Specialized Chemistry Facility
- Includes Storage for chemicals, glassware
- Includes shipping and receiving areas
- Includes area where most prep work for teaching labs is done
- Has window where students replace broken lab glassware
- Has facilities for Hazardous Waste processing
- Facility is managed by Mary Hagman, and is staffed by undergraduate employees
Overman, PSLB and Chemical Storage are connected by an all-weather bridge
Brief History of Department and Buildings
BGSU was founded in 1910 with the first class arriving in 1914
- Initially founded as a teacher's College
- Initially there was a division of natural sciences under
Dr. Mosely (Mosley Hall) which included chemistry.
- Individual science departments, Including Chemistry, were
formed later
- The College was reorganized as a University in 1929
Overman Hall was built in two stages
- stage 1-- Was built specifically as a Chemistry facility
in the 1950's
- stage 2 -- The south end was completed in 1960
- The combined building was named for Dr. Overman,
one of the original faculty from 1910.
- Overman then housed the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Geology
and Mathematics
- The Mathematics and Science Building was completed in 1970
- (Note-- was constructed as the Mathematics and Sciences Building
- name later distorted to Mathematical Sciences by unknown forces)
- Mathematics Moved to that building
- Physics, Chemistry and Geology expanded into space vacated by Mathematics
- We also got some space in Hanna hall at that time
Other Buildings in the Science Complex were completed around the same time
- Psychology
- Life Sciences Building
The Chemical Storage Building as completed in the late 1970's
- Prior to that time, storage was in the basement of Overman
- Chemistry Stockroom was located on the first floor of Overman.
The Physical Sciences Building was completed in 1984
- Construction Cost: $7.1 M
- Brief description: five floors plus basement mechanical area
- bedrock is only 5-10 ft deep so basement was blasted from limestone
Overman Hall was renovated in two major stages in the late 1980's
- resulting in the current facilities.
But a department is not basically facilities. It is people and programs.
- The chemistry department is fully ACS Accredited
- MS Program has operated since the 1960's with most students completing
a research thesis.
- In the 1960's and 1970's BGSU had a very strong summer program for
High School Chemistry teachers, funded by the National Science Foundation.
This program led to a Master's Degree for most participants..
- Center for Photochemical Sciences
- Offers the PhD in the Photochemical Sciences
- The chemistry department is a strong component in the Center for Materials Science
- Center for Bio....)
