retaking courses and taking overlapping courses
updated: October 18, 2000 .... document: advisor/advisor_retaking.htm
The Chemistry Department has several courses which have a prerequisite of C or better in a prior course. For example, Chem 127 has a requirement of a C or better in Chem 125. This policy is based on an observation that few students with D's in the introductory course are ready for the next course in a sequence.
The university's rules on retaking a course are detailed in the catalog. A brief summary is included below:
- You may retake a course for which you received a grade of D, F, I, U or WF. You may not retake a course for which you received a grade of C or better. You must generally retake the course with the same grading option.
- All registrations and grades are part of your official transcript. The first two courses retaken will replace the initial grades in computing your GPA.
- Retaking a course for which you received a D will not generate additional hours towards a degree.
Students with a weak chemistry background may be placed in Chemistry 109 or 100 prior to enrolling in Chemistry 125. Other students may enroll in Chem 109-110 but then discover that their career goals change and that Chem 125 is required. The department's policy is that such courses overlap in coverage and you may not count both sequences towards the hours required for graduation. Similar policies apply to course sequences in organic, physical and analytical chemistry and biochemistry. (Technically, the university counts both courses but adds additional hours to your graduation requirement.)
- Chem 109-110, 125, and 135 are considered overlapping
- Chem 117-118, 127-128 and 137-138 are considered overlapping
- Chem 306 and 341 are considered overlapping
- Chem 405 and 352 are considered overlapping
- Chem 454 and 321 are considered overlapping
- Chem 308 and 445 are considered overlapping
