The College also requires that you have a declared Minor. A minor is normally a concentration (at least 20 hr.) in another program or department. Chemistry majors generally have minors in Biology, Mathematics or Physics but you may minor in any subject. If you have a second major, the other major takes the place of a minor. You need to check the catalog carefully since each department has some additional regulations regarding a minor. For example, Biology 101, 104 and 108 will not count towards a minor.
Most chemistry majors qualify for a General Sciences minor. This requires a total of 53 hr. of courses in Group III (Mathematics and Natural Sciences.) A maximum of 33 hr. of Chemistry can be counted, leaving 20 hr. in other courses. As a rule, the required courses in Physics and Mathematics will constitute the necessary 20 hr.
There is probably a slight preference for a Minor in an established discipline, but there's no reason to be wary of using the general science option.
You do need to formally declare a Major and a Minor; the forms are available at the college office. You may change minors (or majors) at any time although your junior audit and evaluation of your readiness to graduate will be based on the current listing of your major and minor. It's a good idea to have decided on your minor when you file your junior audit.
