last revised: November 13, 2000... document : advisor/advisor_careers.htm

The study of Chemistry is the entry point for a large number of professional careers. Of course many chemistry majors end up as professional chemists. However, BGSU Chemistry Graduates have gone on to successful careers in medicine, dentistry, law (especially patent law), teaching, technical writing, business, computer systems, chemical engineering, food science, biotechnology, scientific writing and scientific data base management.

One useful source for information is the American Chemical Society which has a series of essays on about a dozen different chemistry based careers.

Money isn't everything, but it might be nice to get a realistic idea of what you could expect to earn as a professional chemist. The American Chemical Society publishes a detailed analysis each year.

The ACS Annual Salary Survey is available here. This is a pdf file and your browser might have troubles with it. It is also published in C&EN (Chemical and Enginering News), April 14, 2000 and available in the library.

Another recent article describes employment opportunities, especially those for B.S. Chemists. click here for the article "It's a Bachelor's party for Chemists"
