Grade Appeals, Complaints, Problems

last updated: October 18, 2000 ... file: advisor/avisor_appeals.htm

Every department has a designated contact person for academic complaints, suggestions and formal grade appeals. In most cases the first step should be an attempt to discuss the problems with your instructor. If this is unsatisfactory, contact the department contact person. This can be initiated informally and even anonymously (by phone) if you prefer. (A formal appeal, of course, cannot be anonymous.)

Appeals of grades are subject to some serious practical restrictions. The appeals process is not intended to provide a "second opinion" on the grades given by an instructor. We will certainly review errors of fact (incorrect scores or grading totals), unrealistic grading practices, or issues of fairness.

Grade appeals should be made first through the department. If that is not satisfactory, you can appeal department action through the office of the College of Arts and Sciences.
