Advanced Placement in Chemistry
Credit by Exam
edited: October 24, 2000 ........title: advisor_AP.htm
The department of Chemistry accepts exam scores from the Advanced Placement (AP) program.
A student who scores a 4 or 5 on this exam may, on request, receive credit for one year of General Chemistry 125-127-128 (10 hours.) These credits count towards graduation, towards general education requirements, towards a major or minor. No grades are assigned and the courses are not included when computing your GPA (Grade Point Average.)
A student who receives a 3 on this exam has several options:
- The student may request credit for Chem. 109-110.
- This option should be considered carefully, since Chem. 109-110 is not an appropriate course for many students. For example, it does not count towards a major or a minor in chemistry. It also does not meet the chemistry requirements for majors in biology or premedical studies.
- A student may not count courses in both 109-110 and 125 towards graduation.
- The student may skip the introductory course in a sequence. If the student completes an upper level course with a grade of C or better, he will get credit for the introductory course.
- a student might start in Chem. 127-128 or in Chemistry 135-138 (honors). Upon completing chem. 127-8 or 137-8 with C's or better, the student will be given credit for 5 hr. in Chem. 125.
- a student may also choose to take Chem. 201. Upon completion of this course, the student will receive credit for Chem. 125-127-128 (10 hr..)
- a student may take Chem. 341. Upon completion of this course (C or better) the student will receive credit for Chem. 125-127-128.
- the student must take the course on a letter graded option.
- (We do not give AP credit in Honors Chemistry 135-137-138.)
Credit By Exam
A student who feels he has knowledge equivalant to that of a given
course may petition for credit by exam. There are fees for such an
exam and for credit obtained in this manner.
