Biochemistry addresses the enormously important question of how life-less molecules can collectively interact to produce living organisms. This includes the understanding of such interesting, yet diverse areas as:

1. the relationship between the structure of a biomacromolecule (DNA, RNA, enzymes, proteins) and its biological function
2. the molecular events which occur in photosynthesis in green plants
3. the metabolic reactions which occur when food is digested
4. the reactions which make antibiotics effectivly eliminate a bacterial infection
5. the genetic changes in the metabolism of humans which lead to metabolic disorders
6. the molecular basis of diseases such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, sickle-cell anemia and others

These are just some of the exciting subjects which our students become familiar with. In addition, students are encouraged to become actively involved in the ongoing experimental research at BGSU by participating in undergraduate research in a professor's research lab.
