One can complete the curriculum for obtaining a degree in chemistry, with the major focus on biochemistry, via a number of routes. The individual path and its timing will depend on your preparation prior to college (e.g., did you take calculus in high school, etc). The listing below is provided as the ideal guide for planning your semesters here at BGSU.
This guide places you in the full year biochemistry course (C445/447) and the biochemistry lab (C446) in your junior year. The timing of this is important for at least two reasons. If you plan on doing advanced study (M.S. or Ph.D.) after your B.S. degree at BGSU, it is vitally important that you involve yourself in a significant research experience in biochemistry. By taking biochemistry in your junior year, this permits you to take part in research during part of your junior year, during the summer, and into your senior year. This experience will permit you to be very competitive as you try to enter into a first-class research lab for your graduate work. In addition, if you decide to go directly into the job market, these skills will make you very attractive to many employers.
On the other hand, students planning to apply to medical school are required to take the MCAT exam in the spring of their junior year. The biochemistry courses give you added preparation in important areas covered in the exam.
