Assistantships are awarded on the basis of excellence of the student's academic record, GRE scores, personal letter of intent
and letters of recommendation. It is the Graduate College's policy to award assistantships only to students with a minimum
3.00 accumulative undergraduate GPA. All recommendations for awarding assistantships are made by the Graduate Admissions Committee
to the Department Chair for final approval.
Depending upon the availability of funds, as well as the number of qualified applicants, the department will attempt to provide
financial assistance for as many students as possible for at least one year of study. Currently, the standard teaching assistantship
(TA) in the department for masters students is a .31 appointment. Doctoral students are funded at a higher level. The clock
hour per week obligation and stipend amount for the 2007-2008 academic year are as follows (note that the amount listed is
for the entire period, NOT per semester):
| Award |
Hours Per Week |
Amount of Award |
| 0.31 time |
12.5 |
$5210 (masters) |
| 0.50 time |
20 |
$13278 (doctoral) |
The University assistantship covers the academic year (AY), beginning in August and ending in May. Summer stipends are generally
not available for master's students. There is, however, the possibility for summer funding for doctoral candidates. All fees
except the general fee are waived for ALL graduate students in the summer.
The amounts indicated in the table above also carry some remission of instructional and general fees, and out-of-state-surcharge
for the academic year. Please contact the Graduate Coordinator for current information on tuition waiver policies.
Should a student for any reason wish to forfeit an assistantship before the end of the contract period, the student is urged
to discuss the situation with the Graduate Coordinator and Department Chair before taking such action.
A separate application form is required to apply for financial aid. This form is due by February 15.
