ACS 6020. Teaching American Culture Studies
Introduction to the pedagogy of culture studies. Designed for those currently teaching or planning to teach American Culture Studies, Women's Studies, and Ethnic Studies courses. 3 Credits.

ACS 6030. Supervised Assistantship
American Culture Studies graduate students employed as teaching/research assistants in ACS or other designated department/program are assigned to work with experienced faculty on a tutorial basis. Includes close supervision of assignments, testing, grading, and classroom methods. Prerequisite: consent of ACS program director. May be repeated. Hours may not be counted toward the degree. 2 Credits.

ACS 6050. Lecture Series
Participation in American Culture Studies interdisciplinary lecture series. Course is organized in coordination with the Institute for the Study of Culture and Society. May be repeated. 1 Credit.

Supervised independent completion of a project other than readings. Graded S/U. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 6890. Internship
Supervised experience within setting or institution related to an area of American culture studies. Must be approved by graduate coordinator prior to registration. Students may enroll up to six credit hours; however, only three hours are counted toward the degree. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 6910. Directed Research in American Culture Studies
Supervised independent completion of a project other than readings in an area of American culture. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 6980. Readings for Comprehensive Examination
Supervised independent readings in preparation for the master's comprehensive examination. 1 to 12 Credits.

ACS 6990. Thesis Research
Credit for thesis study. Students may enroll in up to 12 credit hours; however, only three hours are counted toward the M.A. degree. 1 to 12 Credits.

ACS 7200. History of American Studies
Earliest efforts to define an "American character"; institutionalization of American studies; relationship of American studies to Cold War; rise and fall of myth symbol school; challenges to white-male hegemony from women and minority scholars. 3 Credits.

ACS 7300. Seminar in Theories of American Culture Studies
Examination of theories of culture as applicable to study of American culture. Review of American culture scholarship. 3 Credits.

ACS 7400. Genealogy of American Culture
Survey of central cultural and intellectual paradigms in American life. Examines both hegemonic and counter-hegemonic cultural movements and intellectual traditions in their social-historical contexts. Credit allowed for only one of ACS 740, HIST 740. 4 Credits.

ACS 7450. Publication and Professional Development
Presents a range of professional development activities. Focus of course is development of academic writing and professional publication skills. 3 Credits.

ACS 7500. Key Debates in Cultural Studies
Examines contemporary intellectual debates, and new trends and directions in the field of cultural studies. 3 Credits.

ACS 7550. Field Work in American Culture
Independent project under faculty supervision. May consist of participant observer or similar anthropological research, cultural resources inventory or survey, archaeological project, or similar supervised field work. 3 Credits.

ACS 7600. Critical Approaches in Film Studies
Introduction to critical approaches and debates in the discipline of Cinema Studies. Provides an overview of the theoretical constructs central to contemporary film and media study. 3 Credits.

ACS 7800. Seminar in American Culture Studies
An examination of a topic in American culture studies which is particularly appropriate for an interdisciplinary approach and treatment. 3 Credits.

ACS 7820. Topics in American Culture Studies
Examination of selected topics or subject areas which are especially appropriate for an interdisciplinary approach and treatment. May be repeated. 3 Credits.

ACS 7850. Directed Readings in American Culture Studies
On demand. Individual or group study of some phase of American culture not ordinarily offered in curriculum. Prerequisite: consent of instructor and approval of Executive Committee. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 7890. Internship in American Culture Studies
An internship at an appropriate institution or organization concerned with production, collection, recording, preservation, presentation, study, or dissemination of American culture. Proposed field placement registration must be approved by director prior to registration. May be taken for up to six hours, but only three hours count toward graduation. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 7910. Directed Research in American Culture Studies
Individual problems in advanced research not involved in dissertation and ordinarily not offered in curriculum. Prerequisite: consent of instructor and approval of Executive Committee. 1 to 6 Credits.

ACS 7970. Practicum in American Culture
Group field work emphasizing hands-on experience with the materials and methods of recording, preserving, and/or disseminating artifacts of American culture. 3 Credits.

ACS 7980 Readings for Core/Preliminary Examination
Supervised independent readings in preparation for the doctoral preliminary examination. 1 to 12 Credits.

ACS 7990 - Dissertation Research
Students must register for minimum of 16 hours in this course while working on doctoral dissertation. 1 to 16 Credits.
